Projects & Initiatives

The Municipality of Huron East oversees a wide range of projects every year.  View the list of projects below to learn more about our current initiatives.

Creating a welcoming and inclusive downtown Brussels

The Municipality of Huron East is excited to announce that our‘Creating a welcoming and inclusive downtown Brussels’ Project was selected for the My Main Street Community Activator initiative! With this support, we aim to beautify the main street and create a more inviting space for people of all ages and abilities by adding elements including:

  • Streetlight banners;
  • Accessible benches;
  • New waste receptacles (including receptacles for garbage and recycling);
  • Accessible picnic tables;
  • New planters;
  • Two new bike racks;
  • New downtown mural;
  • New parkette solar lighting;
  • New hanging baskets and streetpole flower hangers;
  • Downtown trees and Brussels branded tree containers; and
  • Two ornamental pear trees for in front of the LCBO.

These improvements will be complete by November 30, 2024. This project is supported by the My Main Street program, the Canadian Urban Institute, and the Government of Canada through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).

Huron East Strategic Action Plan

The Municipality of Huron East is a vibrant community, committed to providing a great quality of life and services to our residents. As Huron East continues to grow, we must continue to invest your tax dollars to maintain and improve our roads, bridges, water and wastewater, parks, facilities, and recreational centres to maintain this quality of life. We recognize that our ability to consistently deliver exceptional services to our community depends on spending our time, energy and money on the things that matter most to our residents.

On May 7th, 2024, the Strategic Action Plan: Working Together For You was adopted by Huron East Council. The Action Plan includes goals, strategic priorities, and measurable actions.

“Our new Strategic Action Plan is our roadmap to achieve positive results for our community within this term of Council and beyond. We know that delivering exceptional services depends on spending our time, energy and money on the things that matter most to our residents. Our residents told us how important well-maintained roads, sidewalks, parks, trails, playgrounds, and recreation spaces are to you and your family. You let us know that we need to pursue opportunities for accelerated economic growth and new jobs. And you want us to find ways to grow our community to better support local businesses and refresh our downtown areas” said Mayor Bernie MacLellan.

Huron East Community Rebranding Project

The Municipality of Huron East is re-branding! We recently completed a Strategic Plan, which identified the need for a municipal brand to enhance communication with residents through clear, consistent messaging. This Strategic Plan is a roadmap to achieve positive results for our community within this term of Council and beyond.

What is a brand?

Contrary to popular belief, a brand is not just a logo, product, or service. A brand is a series of elements coming together to generate an emotional response to the community. A brand is a perception; what comes to mind when your name is mentioned and not what people say you are.

Why rebrand?

A revitalized brand identity offers a community many benefits, including an enhanced tourism and investment industry that helps attract consumers and sustainably nurture economic growth. Additionally, a brand identity will:

  • Differentiate a community from competing/nearby towns and cities
  • Forge strong emotional connections with audiences
  • Display a community’s distinct assets and exciting experiences
  • Spark curiosity in tourists; increases the number and length of visits
  • Help attract repeat businesses and drive investment to the area
  • Facilitate renewed civic pride/ambassadorship in residents and attract new families to the area
  • Provide an effective and polished platform from which to mobilize marketing activities and ongoing campaigns

 The Municipality is working with Cinnamon Toast to complete this exercise. The initial community consultation process is now complete. For a project update, please visit www.huroneastasksresidents.com
