Issued: November 2, 2023
A section of Main Street South in Seaforth remains closed to vehicular traffic due to an accident on Friday, October 13, 2023, which left a building at the corner of Main Street South and John Street with extensive damage to a heritage building. As of October 17th, 33 Main Street South has been under the control of the building owners insurance company.
The Municipality is very interested in having the road reopened. This is a unique circumstance and does present some challenges.
The Municipality is getting daily updates from the insurer on their progress. The insurer has retained a structural engineer to assess the structure and to propose next steps. They have taken measures to secure the building and to prevent further damage to the structure from the elements. A partial demolition permit has been issued for removal of brick so a better observation and likely repairs can be made. They have retained a heritage consultant and have indicated that the brick is to be salvaged. A Designated Substances Survey will be completed this week and the Heritage Consultant report is to be completed next week, these reports are necessary to determine how to best proceed
Once the tractor is removed and public safety is addressed, we should be able to open up the roadway. As you can appreciate, it will take time for them to determine the proper course of action.
The building is under a "Make Safe" Order by the municipality. We are and will continue to press for action and progress from the insurer and will prioritize any review and approvals.
Businesses are open and with the exception of the sidewalk adjacent to the impacted building, all sidewalks have re-opened. There are municipal parking lots on John Street and Victoria Street; just steps away from the Main Street. Heading north-bound, local traffic can access Main St. S to Gouinlock Street.
We appreciate your patience as we work towards re-opening Main Street South.
