Municipality of Huron East defers Vacant Building By-law

The Municipality of Huron East Council deferred further consideration of the provisionally adopted Vacant Building By-law at its August 11, 2026 Council meeting. A report on the matter will be brought back to Council on Tuesday, September 23, 2026.

If passed by Council, the provisionally adopted by-law would introduce requirements for property owners, including registration and minimum standards for the maintenance of vacant buildings. These measures are intended to support safe, well-maintained properties and stable neighbourhoods.

Council provisionally adopted the by-law on June 23, 2026, initiating a public feedback period that included written comments and requests to appear as a delegation to Council at the July 7 and August 11 Council meetings. After considering the feedback received during this review period, Council deferred further consideration of the provisionally adopted by-law. A report will return to Council on September 23 to determine next steps.

Final approval of the provisionally adopted Vacant Building By-law will be considered at a future Council meeting following the September 23, 2026 report.

The provisionally adopted by-law can be viewed on the municipal website, along with additional details about requirements and registration information, at www.huroneast.com/vacantbuilding.
