Municipality of Huron East adopts Vacant Building By-law
By-law passed at October 6, 2026 Council meeting
The Municipality of Huron East Council adopted a new Vacant Building By-law at its October 6, 2026 Council meeting.
The by-law introduces requirements for property owners, including registration and minimum standards for the maintenance of fully vacant buildings. These measures are intended to support safe, well-maintained properties and stable neighbourhoods.
Council provided first and second reading of the Vacant Building By-law on June 23, 2026, provisionally adopting it. Opportunities for public input through delegations to Council were provided on July 7 and August 11, 2026. Council was scheduled to consider final approval on August 11, 2026, but deferred the Vacant Building By-law for further consideration at a future meeting. On September 22, 2026, a report was brought to Council to determine next steps, and Council granted final approval on October 6, 2026.
“The Vacant Building By-law will help support safe, well-maintained properties and strong neighbourhoods across Huron East,” says Jessica Rudy, Chief Administrative Officer. “We appreciate the feedback received from residents and property owners throughout the review process.”
This initiative supports the Municipality’s Strategic Plan, including actions to implement a Vacant Building By-law and strengthen enforcement of property standards.
The by-law can be viewed on the municipal website, along with additional details about requirements and registration information, at www.huroneast.com/vacantbuilding.
