Changes to community recycling dumpster bins in Seaforth
The Municipality of Huron East would like to advise residents that the community recycling dumpster bins currently located at several sites throughout Seaforth will be removed after September 15, 2026.
This change is the result of updates to provincial recycling regulations that have shifted responsibility for recycling collection and processing. Under the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework, recycling producers are responsible for residential recycling programs, but publicly provided recycling dumpster bins located at industrial, commercial, and institutional properties are no longer covered and are now subject to collection fees.
As a result, the seven community recycling dumpster bins currently located at the following sites would cost the Municipality more than $20,000 annually to maintain:
- Seaforth Arena
- Huron East Municipal Office (Town Hall)
- Seaforth Agricultural Society
- UPI Energy
- Information Booth
Following a review of these costs, Council approved the removal of the community recycling dumpster bins. As part of the transition to the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) framework, community recycling bins in Brussels were removed in spring 2025.
This change has no impact on existing curbside residential recycling collection or wheelie bins and applies only to municipally provided community recycling dumpster bins.
Those requiring recycling collection services may contact the Bluewater Recycling Association (BRA) at 519-228-6678 ext. 221 to inquire about residential recycling options or ICI (Industrial, Commercial and Institutional) red-lidded recycling bins.
Information about available recycling services can be found through the Bluewater Recycling Association (BRA) website.
