Making a property damage claim

If your claim is for damage to property, we suggest that you contact your own insurer regarding damages. If your insurer believes that the Municipality is responsible for your damage, they will seek compensation on your behalf as stipulated in your insurance policy.

To make a claim against the Municipality for a property damage loss, you will need to reach out to the Clerk. Claims can be submitted in any of the following ways:

  • Email: clerk@huroneast.com
  • Mail: 72 Main St. S, PO Box 610, Seaforth ON N0K1W0
  • In-person: Town Hall, 75 Main St. S, Seaforth (Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm)

Your letter informs the Municipality about your claim. It should describe what was damaged, how it happened and the date and time of the occurrence. It should identify any contractors, if applicable. Remember to include your name, address and the telephone number where you can be reached.

When we receive your claim, an investigation process will be started.  A decision will be made when all of the information has been reviewed and you will be advised as quickly as possible.

Please note that damaged property should be retained and/or photographed and made available for inspection by the Municipality. Municipal legislation may require you to notify the Municipality within 10 days of the date of loss to express your intent to proceed with a claim. Failure to comply with legislated timelines may prejudice your ability to make a claim.

Compensation for your costs

We do not provide compensation for your costs unless you provide evidence that the Municipality of Huron East committed a negligent act or omission which resulted in the injury or damage.

This claims process does not mean that the Municipality of Huron East is accepting liability for your claim, nor does it waive any legal rights that the Municipality may be able to rely on in matters such as these.
