Fences
Before installing a fence in the Municipality of Huron East, it's important to consider several key guidelines and responsibilities to ensure compliance with local regulations and maintain good neighborly relations.
When installing a fence the following considerations should be given:
- A privacy fence is a solid and continuous fence constructed of suitable material to a heigh of no less than 1.5 metres (5 feet) to provide a year-round visual barrier.
- If a fence is on property line, you should gain consent from your neighbour first and know exactly where your property line is (if you need a survey please contact an Ontario Land Surveyor).
- Always get utility locates before digging by calling Ontario One Call.
- It is usually best to keep your fence on your side of the property line, as your neighbour is not required to give access to maintain the fence on the other side.
- It is common courtesy that the side of the fence facing your neighbour is not less attractive than the side facing you.
- Toward the street line of your property, you must ensure the location, height and/or material of the fence does not obstruct the view of anyone entering or exiting driveways.
- A fence may not be installed on municipal property. Please ensure you know where the property survey stakes/bars/pins are at the front of your property.
- You cannot build within the site triangle if you live on a corner (7.5 metres from the corner of the lot, in either direction, and creating a triangle by joining those two lines) or any fence greater than 0.75 metres in height which will obstruct the vision of drivers.
