Marriage Licences

The Municipality of Huron East issues marriage licences by appointment only at the Huron East Town Hall, located at 72 Main Street South, Seaforth, Ontario.

Appointments are available Monday to Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

The fee for a marriage licence is $120, payable by cash, cheque, or debit. The marriage ceremony must take place within 3 months of the date of the issue of the marriage license.

How to apply

Follow these steps to apply for a marriage licence:

1. Check out the ServiceOntario Before Getting Married webpage for the steps you need to take before getting married.
2. Complete Ontario's online marriage licence application through the Province of Ontario.
3. Gather the required identification documents for both applicants and any applicable divorce documentation.
4. Submit your completed application to the Clerk's Department.
5. Once your application has been reviewed, staff will contact you to schedule an appointment to pick up your marriage licence and pay the required fee.
6. When attending your appointment, both applicants must present their original identification documents and any required divorce certificates for verification.

Marriage licence requirements

Age requirements

You must be at least 16 years of age to be legally married in Ontario.

Applicants aged 16 or 17 must provide written consent from both parents or legal guardians. The required consent form is available from the Huron East Town Hall.

Required identification

Both applicants must provide two pieces of original, valid identification. Photocopies will not be accepted.

If any identification is in a language other than English or French, it must be accompanied by an official translation.

One piece of identification must be one of the following:

• Government-issued birth certificate (including any change of name certificates)
• Valid passport
• Record of Immigrant Landing
• Canadian Citizenship Card or Certificate

The second piece of identification must be government-issued photo identification, such as:

• Valid driver's licence
• Valid passport
• Ontario Photo Card
• BYID (Bring Your Identification) age-of-majority card

Please note: Ontario Health Cards cannot be accepted as identification for a marriage licence.

If you are divorced

If one or both applicants have been divorced in Canada, you must provide the original or a certified true copy of one of the following:

• Certificate of Divorce
• Decree Absolute

Divorce judgments are not accepted.

If the divorce was granted outside of Canada, authorization from the Office of the Registrar General is required before a marriage licence can be issued. Contact ServiceOntario for additional information.

If you are widowed

If one or both applicants are widowed, a copy of the death certificate of the deceased spouse must be provided.
