Roads and Sidewalks

The Municipality of Huron East is responsible for the maintenance of 544 kilometres of roads, 40 kilometres of sidewalks, and 128 bridges/culverts throughout the municipality. The Public Works Department's overall purpose is to provide safe passage for all modes of transportation including motorized vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians.

We maintain roads in accordance with the Minimum Maintenance Standards for Municipal Highways. Maintenance activities include routinely patrolling the roads to check for potholes, shoulder drop-offs, cracks, signage repairs, and winter control standards.

Bridges and culverts

Huron East has 128 bridges and culverts, 22 of which are boundary bridges with neighbouring Municipalities.

Half load season restrictions

Half Load season is annually from March 1 to April 30 following the guidelines under the Highway Traffic Act. Restrictions apply to all Municipal and County Roads with the exception of those in an urban setting. No commercial vehicle or trailer may be operated on any posted roads within the municipality where the weight per axle exceeds 5 tonnes as per Half Load Season Restrictions By-Law 014-2017.

Sidewalks

Huron East maintains 40 kilometres of sidewalk. To report any issues with Municipal sidewalks, complete a Report It form.

The Public Works department employs a sidewalk blower/plow in the urban areas of Brussels and Seaforth in an effort to clear the main streets and routes to downtown, schools and churches. Not all sidewalks are cleared of snow by the Municipality. You can help with our snow removal by clearing snow and ice from your sidewalks as soon as possible after a snowfall to ensure that they are safe for all residents. By keeping sidewalks clear, it helps to ensure that all pedestrians, especially those using walkers, scooters and strollers, will be safe.

Streetlights

Complete a Report It form if there are any concerns with streetlights within the Huron East boundaries.
