Issued: November 7, 2023
A section of Main Street South in Seaforth remains closed to vehicular traffic due to an accident on Friday, October 13, 2023, which left a building at the corner of Main Street South and John Street with extensive damage to a heritage building. As of October 17th, 33 Main Street South has been under the control of the building owner's insurance company.
The Municipality remains focused on having the road reopened as quickly as possible. The building remains under a "Make Safe" Order by the municipality. We are and will continue to press for action and progress from the insurer and prioritize any review and approvals.
The Municipality continues to receive daily updates from the insurer on their progress. It has been confirmed through the Designated Substances Survey that asbestos is present within the building and that this asbestos must be removed before the damaged brick façade can be removed. Strict protocols must be followed in order to safely remove the asbestos in a controlled environment. As can be expected work of this nature will take some time to be completed. At this time, the road is expected to re-open the first week of December.
Please note that while Main Street between Goderich Street and Gouinlock Street is closed to vehicular traffic, all sidewalks are open to businesses. There is an abundance of parking available off Victoria Street and John Street, just steps away from our downtown businesses. Please continue to support our local businesses.
We appreciate your patience as we work towards re-opening Main Street South.
