In 1948, Max Oldfield, an Air Force wireless mechanic, purchased this elegant 1910 building and hardware business from William Gillespie, its founder. Fire Hall Location: 51 CN Road near Industrial Park
Fire destroyed the Brussels downtown core three times between 1860 and 1875. A volunteer fire brigade was housed in the Town Hall from 1875 into the 1960s.The town bell, once used to summon volunteer firefighters, is now part of the new Brussels Fire Department building, opened in 1995. more... |

The Graham Block, built in 1877, housed the Brussels 5˘- $1.00 Store for 56 years. The exuberant Gothic of the ground floor belies the staid Eastlake upper storeys. A flour and gristmill was first built on this site in 1859. John Logan built the Logan Mill in 1914-1915. Closed in 1967, it was sold to the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority in 1972. A 16-hectare millpond, the result of a man-made dam, creates a picturesque setting for the mill. more... |

Built in 1914-15, this magnificent structure is dominated by a 65-foot tower. It has seating capacity for 650, including a balcony. Although the building is rectangular, the interior layout of the nave is on the bias, with the pulpit in the corner. It was built at a cost of $25,700. more... |

Brussels Livestock Location: R.R. #3 Year begun: 1958
The largest livestock auction in Ontario, Brussels Livestock was started in 1958 by two local men, Jack Bryans and Hugh Pearson. From the beginning, the community livestock auction held once-weekly sales of pigs and cattle. Today all types of livestock are sold here and auction is still the preferred sales method. more... |

Its present owner, James Armstrong, has had a keen interest in flying since childhood and it was he who built the first airstrip in Grey Township in 1953. Father James Murphy, the pastor appointed to Irishtown in 1864, oversaw construction of the original church built here in 1876. St. Ambrose was for many years a mission of Wingham. Jim McNeil bought the Ament Mill building on Turnberry Street in 1946 where he had a Shell Service Station. The McNeils served the community for over 35 years. Dunedin Manor was built in 1887 for Dr. W.J.R. Holmes, modeled after and named for Dunedin Castle in Scotland. Dr. Holmes had offices here and it served two other local doctors, Drs. McRae and Myers.
