This fall, new yoga studio ‘Yoga for Life’ will be opening its doors in historic Seaforth. We spoke with yoga instructor, Paula Deering, to learn more about her and the studio.
Paula, tell us a bit about yourself:
I received my yoga teacher training at Sheridan College in Oakville which included two levels of courses in the asanas (poses), anatomy, history of yoga as well as a nutrition course and First Aid/CPR. I’ve also taken other workshops and yoga retreats.
I’m new in the community since March, 2013 moving from Mississauga. I enjoyed a career in Human Resources for 10 years prior to moving to Seaforth. I worked for a not for profit agency that provided supports for daily living for seniors. While working in HR, I was a director with the Human Resources Professional Association, Peel Chapter and director with the Community Foundation of Mississauga both for a number of years.
How did you become involved in yoga?
I’ve always been interested in yoga but didn’t start practicing regularly until a studio opened near my office and I was able to go before work or at lunch. I enjoyed it so much that I thought it would be a great next career and my ulterior motive was it would keep me fit too.
Where is your yoga studio located?
My studio is located in my own home at 115 John Street. With a studio in my home I am able to offer classes when or how I want. The studio is small so the maximum number of students I will take is five and the minimum to have a class will be three. In a small class students will receive individual attention.
What are the benefits of practicing yoga, and who should take your classes?
Yoga is good for anyone – however, if you have health problems it is a good idea to check with your doctor first to receive the okay to participate. I will be offering a gentle yoga to keep you flexible, increase muscle and bone strength and improve balance. I have a special interest in poses that may prevent or reduce the effects of osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Yoga has also been known to ease the discomfort of other ailments too, such as Parkinson’s Disease. Students will work to their own ability and if they participate on a regular basis will be able to avoid many of the pitfalls of aging.
What can students expect at the Open House and in your classes?
The Open House will be an opportunity to meet students and for the students to meet me and view my facility and equipment. I will also have a survey so that potential student can let me know their preferred time and day for yoga. I plan on accommodating students wishes as much as I can. The September 10th at 9:00 a.m. complimentary class is confirmed but I may change the dates of the other classes according to interest. Light refreshments will be available at the Open House.
Visit the Yoga for Life Open House on Tuesday, September 3rd, 10:00am until 12:00pm.
Classes begin Tuesday, September 17, 2013.
Three complimentary classes are being offered: on Tuesday, September 10 – 9:00am; tentatively Wednesday, September 11 – 11:00am; and tentatively Thursday, September 12 – 3:00pm.
Registration is required.
